Full sun: plants need at least 6-8 hours of sun and will need to receive the afternoon sun, not the early day sun from 6am to noon. Even though that is six hours, if these plants don't get the afternoon sun they will reach towards the light and not flower as well as if they get more light.
Part sun: plants need at least 4 hours of sun. This can be late morning sun or afternoon sun.
Part shade: plants will tolerate morning sun but not the hot afternoon sun.
Shade: plants will tolerate early morning sun or late evening sun but the rest of the time they must be in the shade. Preferably from 10am on in the shade if not earlier.
Some of the full shade plants can be planted under deciduous trees, they will tolerate more sun in the very early spring but then welcome the shade of the trees once they leaf out and temperatures climb in the summer.
